What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise based on the teachings of German born Joseph H. Pilates. His system of exercises, originally called Contrology, is based on these simple principles: Centering, Control, Breathing, Precision, Flowing Movement, Concentration & Proper Alignment. The exercises are designed to strengthen the core muscles, increase body control, increase flexibility, integrate the spine & the limbs and most important — connect the mind to the body.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Pilates develops a heightened body awareness, increased flexibility, increased balance & stability, strengthened deep core muscles, decreased & often elimination of chronic back pain, connection of body & breath and improved posture & alignment — to simply name a few.

Who can participate?

As with any new exercise program, it is extremely important to consult your physician before beginning a regular Pilates program. Unlike most conventional exercise, anyone can do Pilates. The work is equally great for those with ailments or injuries, and for those training for that next marathon or triathlon. You will be amazed at the change in athletic performance and everyday activities with the addition of Pilates to your training program. By incorporating breath with fluid movement & control, Pilates works from the inside out. Pilates is very gentle on the joints while creating incredible & challenging work for the muscles.

One-on-one Pilates training at Breathe is designed to address:
  • Pre & post natal clients
  • Shoulder & neck pain/tension & chronic back pain
  • Knee, hip, shoulder joint issues or replacements
  • Spine & structural issues (scoliosis, osteopenia & osteoporosis etc.)
  • Post rehabilitation from surgery or injury
  • Athletic performance enhancement (golf, marathons, triathlons, football, tennis etc.)
